About us

DouniyaWest African Drum and Dance, brings together some of Australia’s finest West African & Australian musicians and dancers to share the traditions of West African music and culture. The West African ancient tradition of rhythm, song and dance began in the Mandeng Empire. The musicians were known as Griots. Griots families continue to carry these traditions across generations and keep the traditions alive. Douniya offers regular classes, intensive workshops, private tuition and performance.

What to expect from tuition…

The drum is a musical instrument, the rhythm the language. The drum classes teach traditional rhythms, showing students how different rhythmic parts and solo patterns fit together. Classes also teach technique, build stamina and develop repertoire.

West African dance is a high energy dance form accompanied by live drumming. The drums and the dance are closely connected. The dance classes focus on traditional choreographies and how the dance steps relate to the rhythmic parts. A student will learn how to express the movements and develop an African style.

See our regular class and workshop timetables for more details.

What to expect from performance…

A vibrant and high energy performance, filled with music, dance, song and colour. This performance will enliven your event as well as providing a unique and genuine taste of the spirit of West African culture. Performance may include drumming, dance, singing, other traditional instruments, audience participation and education.
